Dear {FIRST_NAME},

Last week I got an email from someone who needed a web site. They already had someone offer $500 to build it for them. Sounds like a good deal, doesn’t it?

When I see a price like this I surmise that the offer was by TGMBK (This Guy My Brother Knows) or a PFK (Pimply Faced Kid). A professional web design company wouldn’t be around long if they offered prices like this.

We are creatures of belief. We want to think the $3,000 cash back from a car dealer is a deal. We want to believe our children are telling the truth when the evidence is to the contrary. And we want to believe that a $500 web site is going to allow us to build a business.

Here are three questions you should ask yourself when choosing a web design company:

Do They Have Success Stories?

The only way you can forecast the weather is to look at prevailing patterns and historical data. Choosing a web design firm is no different. They should have dozens of sites for you to look at so you can see a pattern of historical success, as well as the quality of their work.

Do They Specialize in Web Site Design?

Just because someone is good with computers, like re-installing a printer driver or bringing your laptop back to life, it doesn’t mean they can create a web site that is attractive and generates business. You need someone who is focused on web design.

Are They Concerned About Your Long-Term Success?

A responsible web design company will think beyond just the site design. They will create a site that is also search engine friendly and converts visitors to leads or sales. A company called recently that wanted search engine optimization for their site. The site was created entirely in Flash, which means that the search engines can’t read any of the text in their site. The web designer failed to create pages that the search engines could actually read.

The same questions can be asked of companies who offer search engine marketing. It needs to be a primary service of the company you choose.

Green Chair has made a choice over the years to continually narrow our focus. We focus solely on web design and Internet marketing. We rarely do print projects and definitely don’t get into radio or TV.

Make a New Year’s resolution to have a professional looking site that will attract the right people to your site, as well as to get people to your site through the search engines. Give me a call at 720-922-3124 to talk about your company’s web site or online marketing needs. We want to be your Internet marketing department.

WEB SITE SPOTLIGHT: RickReillyOnline.com

Rick Reilly has spent the last 23 years at Sports Illustrated as one of America’s best loved sportswriters. He recently left Sports Illustrated and will be joining ESPN in June. In the meantime he needed a site to keep in touch with his fans during the six-month non-compete period. Since debuting a couple weeks ago thousands of people have visited his site and Rick has received several hundreds of emails from his fans sharing how much his columns have meant to them over the years.

JUST FOR GRINS: "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey"

Jack Handey was a fictional character on “Saturday Night Live” from a decade ago. They would play pretty music with a nice backdrop, and then have these absurd sayings scrolling down the screen. Check out some of the funnier ones we found:

"Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis."

"I hope if dogs ever take over the world, and they chose a king, they don't just go by size, because I bet there are some Chihuahuas with some good ideas."

"The face of a child can say it all, especially the mouth part of the face."

"If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for mercy, then yes, Mr. Brave man, I guess I'm a coward."

"We tend to scoff at the beliefs of the ancients. But we can't scoff at them personally, to their faces, and this is what annoys me."

"I wish outer space guys would conquer the Earth and make people their pets, because I'd like to have one of those little beds with my name on it."

"If I was the head of a country that lost a war, and I had to sign a peace treaty, just as I was signing I'd glance over the treaty and then suddenly act surprised. 'Wait a minute! I thought WE won!' "

"One thing about my aunt Nadie: she was gruff on the outside, but if you ever needed something, like a spanking or a scolding, she'd give it to you."

"Children need encouragement. If a kid gets an answer right, tell him it was a lucky guess. That way he develops a good, lucky feeling."
