Website Top Rankings - Key-Phrase Secret

In my years of experience, I have witnessed website owners struggling to gain website top rankings. I could see that they do not understand what is behind key-phrases. Large number believe that key-phrases searched very often are the good ones. Some times, but not always. For instance, a key-phrase searched 2,000 times a day in Google, Yahoo, and MSN combined is a good key-phrase. They fail to see that it is likely to be highly competitive and impossible to gain their website top rankings with it.

Assuming you are one of those struggling owners, a meaningful story should give you a solid understanding of how to look at this critical issue. Once upon a time, two ladies in Boulder, Colorado in the USA contacted me. They had a nice website, but it was not built with Search Engines in mind. In my assessment, I realized that it would be silly to invest efforts in optimizing existing web pages. However, there was another detrimental issue they confronted: very few surfers look for their otherwise beautiful products.

These two women were selling Gift Baskets for pets. How many surfers look for Gift Baskets for pets ? Trust me, very few. I could have achieved top rankings for their website with my eyes closed, but few people would enter their website. However, about 2,500 times "a day" surfers in Google, Yahoo, and MSN typed in their browsers Pet Names, Puppy Names, Cat Names, Kitty Names, Boy Dog Names, and other similar key-phrases. None of the surfers searched for Gift Baskets, but they have one thing in common: Pets !

This was my strategy.

Since surfers want pets' names, I will give them what they want; but I wanted to do it intelligently. I wanted to impress them. So, "I put on my thinking cup", and I found it. I first designed 5 web pages with Search Engines in mind, of course. They all would match the overall look of their website, but unlike their existing web pages, these 5 web pages would allow full optimization. Then, I chose 5 important key-phrases and 5 slightly less important key-phrases. Each web page will be optimized for two key-phrases: one "primary" and one "secondary".

Pay good attention to what comes next.

I then used the Internet to find the pets' names of people like Queen Elizabeth II, Frank Sinatra, John F. Kennedy, Bill Gates, Silvester Stalone, Winston Churchill, John Wayne, Tiger Woods, John Rockefeller III, Ringo Starr, General Paton, Charles de Gaulle, Bob Hope, Celine Dion, Lucille Ball, Arnold Schwarznegger, and a quite long list of them. I then created the 5 web pages integrating those celebrities' and well known people's names and the names they gave to their respective pets.

As surfers arrived to those 5 web pages, they also found at the bottom of each web page a tastefully designed screen-wide graphic inviting them to click on and visit a splendid collection of Gifts Baskets for their pets. All in all, surfers received an interesting and captivating version of what they wanted, my clients were making sales like never before, and I got a check for my fees.

So, "put on your thinking cup" ~as British would say~ when it comes to choose key-phrases to gain your website top rankings.
